We had several correct answers for our September’s What Is It. Congratulations to Jeanne Reynolds of Nederland, Colorado; Jacque Rutledge, Northglenn, Colorado; Carolyn Kundel, Roland, Iowa; Jonathan Bond, Franktown, Colorado; Sylvia Robertson, Evergreen, Colorado; and Violet Easterling, Edgewater, Colorado. You have all correctly identified the objects as pestles to grind things in a mortar or mashers. Called beetles, the beaters above were used for mashing potatoes and other vegetables. Many beaters of this type were whittled by a boy or farm hand out of a single piece of wood. Congratulations to the winners. They have won a year’s subscription to the Mountain States Collector.
