The Merry Month of May in Florence

By Sandy Dale

I love May not because of all the usual things like budding trees and flowers, baby goats, lambs and calves in the fields and fabulous weather, but because it is time for the 2018 Florence Car Show. I’m going to let the car show organizers tell you about it:
“The annual Florence Merchants’ Colorado Car Show is a relaxed, noncompetitive showing of classic cars, along with fun family friendly events, great food and shopping in historic Florence, Antique Capital of Colorado on May 20, 2018.
“Come to Main Street in the small town of Florence on scenic Highway 115 to celebrate the 17th anniversary of one of southern Colorado’s favorite car, truck and hotrod shows.
“The Car Show started back in 2002 with only eleven cars and has now grown to over 200 cars annually. With historic Main Street closed off, local Florence businesses host car collectors, car lovers and their families for this one-day event. Enjoy the day shopping for antiques, viewing classic and custom vehicles, touring the local Pioneer Museum, enjoying local art galleries and a variety of wonderful local restaurants, cafes, and bars.
“Admission is free to the public. A $25.00 registration fee for vehicles is required for participants. There are drawings for door prizes and cash.
“This year Dennis Gage of My Classic Car will be at the Merchants’ Association Car Show. Dennis and his crew will be shooting footage for his TV show.”
This is my all-time favorite event in Florence. This year it has been expanded to five blocks. Fabulous vintage and custom vehicles on both sides of the street. I’m even tarting up my old Dodge pickup for the event. For more information check the website at http://florencecoloradocarshow.com.
Also in Florence in this merry month of May, the Merchants honor the Armed Forces with window exhibits of art by active duty, Veterans, and retired military personnel from May 12 through May 28.
The Bell Tower Cultural Center with the Florence Arts Council presents Back Roads of Colorado, a juried exhibit of paintings and mixed media pieces May 18 through June 26.
